Player names won’t return on jumpers: AFL

The AFL won’t revisit putting player names on jumpers after scrapping the concept, the league’s chief executive Gillon McLachlan says.

The league trialled the jumper names in round five this season with a cold response from spectators and television viewers.

“The execution just hasn’t worked because of the style and cut of our jumpers,” McLachlan told reporters in Adelaide on Friday.

“They (jumpers) are tighter than ever; they’re cut in around the arms; they don’t have sleeves.

“And the font size ultimately wasn’t able to be seen from the stands or even from the television because of the right cut.

“I won’t be revisiting it in my lifetime, I don’t think.”

McLachlan’s comments came ahead of a meeting with South Australia’s two AFL clubs to review the financial model of Adelaide Oval.

Both the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide are reportedly unhappy with the amount of revenue they’re getting from the redeveloped oval, after returning to play AFL games at the inner-city stadium this year.

McLachlan’s AFL, the clubs, the local SANFL football and the Stadium Management Authority on Friday held an initial meeting to start the review.

“It’s about establishing the frameworks and the principles and ultimately what we are trying to get done in the review,” McLachlan said.

“My view is that it has to be the right share for the two clubs and the right share for the SANFL.”
