‘Pies stars struggle in AFL loss

The predicted sharp spike in performance from Dane Swan is yet to happen and Travis Cloke has kicked just two goals in three games.

But when asked if he had concerns about two of his most important players, Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley simply said “no”.

Cloke was held scoreless in Saturday night’s 11-point AFL loss to Geelong, while Swan did not have a major influence as the Magpies midfield had its colours lowered.

Asked again about the pair, Buckley explained: “Clokey was beaten and Swanny was one of the midfield mix that was well down.”

“We don’t rely in him (Cloke) to be the person to kick the winning score.

“We expect the rest of our forward line to tip in and get that done.

“You are not going to win many games with 11 goals and you are not going to (kick) many winning scores with just 42 inside 50 entries.”

Buckley had strongly defended Swan following his quiet game against Sydney.

The ‘Pies coach said during the week there would be a sharp spike in Swan’s performance.

Swan was better, picking up 23 disposals, but he is still yet to regain top form.

It was a mixed night for the Magpies – they fought the game out well and Brent Macaffer did a great run-with role on Cats star Steve Johnson.

Small forward Jamie Elliott was also outstanding with five goals.

But Collingwood and Richmond have one win from three games ahead of next Friday night’s must-win clash.

The Magpies also have several sore players – Sam Dwyer, Nick Maxwell, Henrieta Lumumba and Dayne Beams all had to leave the field against Geelong, but were able to return.

“We have had casualties from the game – we have probably had three or four blokes who were sore throughout,” Buckley said.

“Our doc was busy tonight … (but) we are confident we will field a competitive, fit side and be ready to go.”
