Petrie joins Lake at AFL tribunal

Drew Petrie will join Brian Lake, his fiery opponent from Friday night, at the AFL tribunal.

As expected, North Melbourne are fighting their key forward’s misconduct charge.

The match review panel (MRP) booked Petrie for making unnecessary and unreasonable contact to Lake’s face during the third term on Friday night at Etihad Stadium.

North coach Brad Scott said he was flabbergasted that Petrie was charged.

Lake threw Petrie to the ground and grabbed his throat as they wrestled.

Petrie then grabbed at the Hawthorn defender’s face as he struggled to break free.

“I’d ask any reasonable person to suggest what Drew should have done in that situation,” Scott told the Seven Network’s Talking Footy.

“Maybe write Brian an email? Because he couldn’t see. He couldn’t breathe and he couldn’t talk.

“I’m not sure what else he was supposed to do.

“(You can use) any adjective (to describe the charge). Flabbergasted came to my mind.”

The MRP also charged Lake with misconduct over the incident and referred him straight to the tribunal.

That means it is entirely up to the tribunal what penalty Lake receives if he is found guilty of the charge.

Lake could also plead guilty and argue for a reduced penalty.

Petrie could have accepted a reprimand and carryover points and is risking a one-match ban by going to the tribunal.

Essendon acting captain Brendon Goddard, Brisbane midfielder Tom Rockliff and West Coast key forward Josh Kennedy have accepted one-game suspensions.

North Melbourne youngster Luke McDonald, Greater Western Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford and Gold Coast defender Rory Thompson took reprimands, while Brisbane’s Claye Beams received a fine.
