North upset Port by seven points in AFL

North Melbourne stormed home with a five-goal final term to upset the previously unbeaten Port Adelaide by seven points in their AFL round-three clash on Sunday.

The Kangaroos have scored their second win of the season after outlasting Port 14.13 (97) to 13.12 (90) before a crowd of 19,111 at Etihad Stadium.

Port led by 10 points at three-quarter time but were overpowered in the final term, kicking 2.3 to North’s 5.2.

Small men Lindsay Thomas and Brent Harvey kicked three goals each for North while Ben Cunnington was a strong contributor in midfield alongside Levi Greenwood.

Jay Schulz booted three goals for Port and Matthew Broadbent was dominant in a defensive role.

Port started strongly and led 4.3 (27) to 3.2 (20) at quarter-time.

North fought back with a four-goal second term to Port’s three as the home side grabbed a one-point advantage at halftime, 7.3 (45) to 6.8 (44).

The Kangaroos had edged in front despite Port’s 30-18 dominance of the inside-50s. Held goal-less last week, Thomas kicked three of North’s seven first-half majors on Sunday.

Port’s in-form small forward Angus Monfries also looked lively, scoring two goals in a 14-possession first half before being subbed off early in the third quarter with a possible hamstring strain.

North activated their sub in the third term after Jamie Macmillan limped off with a suspected ankle injury.

The Kangaroos booted a wasteful 2.8 in the third quarter to Port’s 5.1 as the visitors went 10 points clear, 11.9 (75) to 9.11 (65).

North rediscovered their accuracy and scored three of the first four goals of the final term to lead by three points at the 18-minute mark.

Port’s Broadbent capped off a fine performance with a 60-metre goal on the run to put the visitors back in front moments later.

However North regained the lead with classy goals to Nick Dal Santo and Harvey, his second of the quarter, to move 11 points ahead.

The visitors were unable to score another goal as the Kangaroos held on with both sides looking exhausted.

Travis Boak and Ollie Wines were among Port’s key ball-winners while Alipate Carlile held North’s key forward Drew Petrie goal-less.

Port host Brisbane on Saturday in round four while North face the Swans at the SCG the following day.
