No Goodes good news for AFL’s Roos

North Melbourne coach Brad Scott is openly delighted that Sydney superstar Adam Goodes will be missing when the Kangaroos take on the Swans at the SCG on Sunday.

Goodes, who was due to break the Swans’ games record, will instead have to wait an extra round as he serves a one-match rough conduct suspension.

Scott made no effort to hide his joy at the dual Brownlow Medallist’s absence.

“I’m sure Adam Goodes checks the fixture every year to see when they play North Melbourne,” Scott told reporters on Thursday.

“If he’s out of form, we play him back into form.

“If he’s in great form, we put him in better form.

“It’s obviously a huge loss for them and he’s a terrific player, a player we’ve struggled to counter in the past.

“It’s disappointing for them, but we’re mildly elated.”

Scott said the Swans’ star would have given the North coaching staff the biggest planning headaches this weekend had he been playing.

“Go back and have a look at the games that he’s played against us, he’s just absolutely dominated against us,” Scott said.

“It shortened our match committee by about an hour this morning.”

The Kangaroos are coming off a breakthrough win over reigning premiers Geelong.

Scott said while they were buoyed by that victory, it would not be worth much if they could not maintain that form.

“We’ve got a long way to go to get where we want to be,” he said.

“It’s a small win along the way, but it by no means means we should be compared against the better sides in the competition yet.”

He said while the Swans’ midfield lacked the profile of their Cats counterparts, the likes of Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Daniel Hannebery were good young players in strong form.
