Mumford a stand-out as Giants beat Demons

Rejuvenated ruckman Shane Mumford produced a Herculean effort to guide Greater Western Sydney to a 32-point win over Melbourne and earn plaudits from both his past and present AFL coaches.

Mumford amassed a total of 60 hit-outs – believed to be one of the biggest tallies on record – as GWS slogged their way to a 10.9 (79) to 7.5 (47) win at a wet Spotless Stadium on Sunday.

GWS slammed on four straight goals in the final quarter after leading by just one point early in that period.

The result improved their season record to 2-1 and left Demons coach Paul Roos still searching for his first victory at his new club after three defeats.

Melbourne became the first team to lose twice to the Giants, who have already equalled their previous best season win tally of two.

Played in damp and rainy conditions, the match produced only three first-half goals.

Melbourne trailed by 16 points at one stage, but fought back to lead for a very brief time in the third quarter, after which the Giants surged home.

“For us to respond was fantastic and that helped us lead into playing a dominant last quarter,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said.

Mumford added nine tackles and a crucial last-quarter goal to his monumental hit-out tally.

“All our young mids stand a little bit taller and they want to try to emulate him, I don’t think they can,” Cameron said.

“Their tackle pressure was fantastic as well and to have 115 tackles is mainly probably due to ‘Mummy’ leading the charge.”

Roos cited the Giants’ big advantages in clearances (61-36) and tackles (115-70) as key factors in the result.

“To their credit, they kept working and we dropped off,” Roos said.

Roos coached Mumford at the Sydney Swans and thought the big ruckman was getting back to the top form he displayed there.

“He looks back to his really fit and healthy best, which is good for him and good for the Giants,” Roos said.

Mumford confirmed he was in better nick fitness-wise than he had been towards the end of his time at the Swans.

“My body is probably the best it has been the last two, three years,” Mumford said.

Giants midfielder Adam Treloar revelled in the wet, piling up 33 possessions and laying 14 tackles.

Impressive second-game rookie midfielder Josh Kelly and key forwards Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton each kicked two goals for GWS.

Jack Watts and Lynden Dunn each booted two goals for the Demons.
