Miles earns new Tigers AFL contract

Richmond midfield revelation Anthony Miles has signed a two-year contract to stay with the Tigers.

The 22-year-old has been at the centre of the Tigers’ late-season AFL revival, playing in each of Richmond’s seven straight wins.

His reward for strong form is a deal to stay at Punt Road until the end of the 2016 season.

Miles said the chance to sign on to Richmond’s senior list was awesome.

“I was hopeful (of re-signing), but I did think I’d have to wait until the end of the year,” he said.

“Even at the start of the year, I was just hoping to be a rookie for another year.”

It seems Miles’ form has prompted the Tigers to move ahead of the trade period, keeping him out of the sights of rival clubs.

Miles’ rise from AFL discard to in-demand ball-winner has been extraordinary.

Delisted by Greater Western Sydney at the end of last season, Miles could have found himself on the AFL scrap heap as a 21-year-old.

But Richmond threw him a second chance in the rookie draft, and he hasn’t looked back.

Elevated to the senior list at the height of Richmond’s injury problems, Miles has played every match since debuting in round 12.

He’s been a key reason behind the Tigers’ charge to the finals, averaging a club-high 6.4 clearances and sitting only behind captain Trent Cotchin in contested possessions.

The modest Miles said he was just happy to play his role in the team.

“I suppose I’m not as blessed as a lot of other blokes with a whole lot of pace and fantastic skills,” he said.

“I just try and do the basics well, and let the other boys do the rest.

“To be 7-3 in those games that I’ve played … and to be able to have an impact on that has been awesome as well.”
