Melbourne’s Trengove to miss AFL season

Melbourne’s former co-captain Jack Trengove will miss the rest of the AFL season with a broken foot.

The Demons released a statement on Tuesday announcing scans on his left foot revealed a crack of the navicular bone.

Trengove had reported soreness following his VFL game for the Casey Scorpions on Sunday.

The 22-year-old is set to have surgery on Wednesday and his recovery time is estimated at four months.

Melbourne’s football manager Josh Mahoney says Trengove will bounce back for 2015.

“Jack’s attitude has been outstanding this year, particularly in recent weeks whilst playing in the VFL, and for this to happen to him is really unfortunate,” Mahoney said.

“He is a resilient character. At Melbourne, we’ve had two examples of players who have had this type of injury in Colin Garland and Jack Grimes and they both made full recoveries.

“We expect Jack to make a full recovery, and be available for day one of pre-season training.”

The news sours Melbourne’s joy over last weekend’s first win of the season, lifting the Demons to a 1-3 record.

A veteran of 81 games including 20 in 2013, Trengove was dropped to the VFL after round two this season.

The midfielder was co-captain of Melbourne in 2012 and 2013.
