McVeigh expects Malceski to face Roos

Sydney Swans co-captain Jarrad McVeigh has no doubt rebounding defender Nick Malceski will be fit for Friday’s AFL preliminary final clash with North Melbourne at ANZ Stadium.

The veteran half back, who has made the initial All-Australian squad, suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter of the Swans’ qualifying final victory over Fremantle.

On Monday before training at the SCG, McVeigh said Malceski was coming along really well.

“I asked him how he was and he said he’s fine, so that’s his mindset at the moment,” McVeigh said.

“He’s done whatever he’s had to. He probably hasn’t left the club, but I’ve got no doubt he’ll be out there on the weekend.”

North Melbourne’s 43-point win over Sydney at the SCG in round four was the biggest of the five defeats the Swans have suffered this year.

That loss left Sydney with a 1-3 record, but proved a turning point as they then went on a club-record equalling 12-game winning streak.

“They comprehensively beat us, but we are a completely different team now,” McVeigh said.

“The way we were playing then was not the way we want to play.

“It was unacceptable for us and fortunately we turned it around.

“For us, that’s a distant memory and we think we’re a lot better team coming into this weekend’s game.”
