Maguire re-signs with AFL’s Lions

Veteran Brisbane Lions defender Matt Maguire has completed a remarkable turnaround by securing a new one year deal with the AFL club.

The 30-year-old appeared on the outer early in the season but became cornerstone of the Lions defence, playing 12 of the last 13 games of the year.

Maguire – nicknamed Goose – played 13 games in 2014 in total.

The former St Kilda player remains the most successful member of the six experienced players – which included Brendan Fevola – recruited in late 2009 by then coach Michael Voss.

Maguire has played 69 games in five seasons at Brisbane after 99 matches for the Saints.

“Matt is a fantastic personality to have around the club and the experience he brings to our young group is invaluable,” Lions football manager Dean Warren said.

“We are really pleased that Matt will be going around again in 2015 and there is no doubt that the likes of Darcy Gardiner and Justin Clarke will benefit immensely from having someone with Matt’s experience alongside them in the backline.”
