Magpies expect to lose Greenwood for weeks

Collingwood president Eddie McGuire says Collingwood fans shouldn’t expect to see new Magpie Levi Greenwood until well into the AFL season.

Greenwood, one of the club’s highest profile acquisitions in the AFL off-season, injured his foot in Collingwood’s heavy loss to Western Bulldogs on Saturday.

The 26-year-old’s right ankle became wedged underneath Bulldog Jarrad Grant’s leg during a tackling motion, with Greenwood helped from the ground.

Coach Nathan Buckley’s initial response to the injury wasn’t good, and two days later it appears the injury prognosis hasn’t improved.

“He’ll be tested today, he’ll go in and have all the scans,” McGuire told Triple M radio.

“I think it’s going to be a lot longer than round one.

“I think he’ll be out for a fair bit of the early part of the season.”

Greenwood is set to join Brent Macaffer, Clinton Young and Matthew Scharenberg as Magpie non-starters for round one.

The loss is a blow for Collingwood, which starts the season with a series of even-looking matches against clubs with finals ambitions.

After a first-up trip to the Gabba to play a rising Brisbane side, Collingwood plays Adelaide, Essendon and Carlton in the next four weeks.

Greenwood’s form during the NAB Challenge suggests the former Kangaroo, who came third in North Melbourne’s best and fairest last season, was preparing to hit the ground running.

In the Magpies’ first-up win over Hawthorn, Greenwood collected 15 disposals in a steady display.

He was among Collingwood’s best in the narrow round two loss to Carlton in Bendigo, leading his side’s disposals with 17 touches.

On Saturday he left the field early in the third term as the Bulldogs won 0.16.7 (115) to 0.8.6 (54).
