He was controversially overlooked for All-Australian honours, but defender Eric Mackenzie can hang his hat on a club champion award after being named West Coast’s best and fairest on Friday night.

Last year, Matt Priddis pipped Mackenzie to win the Eagles’ club champion award.

But the roles were reversed this year as Mackenzie won his first John Worsfold Medal.

The 26-year-old was rarely beaten in 2014, and even added some extra leadership responsibilities to his repertoire once skipper Darren Glass was forced into early retirement in June.

Mackenzie was considered unlucky to miss out on All-Australian selection last year, and some experts were left staggered when he was again overlooked this season in favour of Richmond’s Alex Rance and Adelaide’s Daniel Talia.

Priddis was a surprise winner of the Brownlow medal this year, but he finished 11 votes behind Mackenzie (201 votes) for the club champion award.

Midfielder Luke Shuey (148) finished third, with Andrew Gaff (148) and Jack Darling (126) rounding out the top five.

Veteran defender Sam Butler was named the best clubman, while emerging star Jeremy McGovern took out the Rookie of the Year award.

Premiership star Beau Waters and club staff member Chris Summer won the community award for their work off the field.
