Lions ruckman to miss 10-12 weeks of AFL

Brisbane ruckman Matthew Leuenberger will miss about three months of the AFL season after undergoing knee surgery.

The Lions have confirmed that Leuenberger tore the lateral meniscus in his right knee during Saturday’s big loss to Port Adelaide.

He had surgery on Tuesday morning and the Lions said in a statement that Leuenberger will be out of action for 10-12 weeks.

Brisbane’s season is in freefall, with the Lions 0-4 and Leuenberger the latest addition to a long injury list.

Pearce Hanley has a grade-one hamstring tear and will also be out of action for a fortnight.

“It’s obviously an extremely disappointing setback for Matthew,” said Lions football director Dean Warren.

“He is an integral part of our side and a strong on-field leader and we will definitely miss his presence.

“We have lost a wealth of experience due to injury over the last few weeks, so to lose Matthew for an extended period of time will challenge our depth.”
