Lions must gain accuracy: Leppitsch

Brisbane Lions coach Justin Leppitsch bemoaned his side’s kicking accuracy in attack and defence following their 12-point loss to the West Coast Eagles on Saturday night.

From arc-to-arc the Lions showed impressive signs, often running through their opponents, who struggled to deal with the pace of Dayne Zorko, Pearce Hanley and Josh Green in particular.

But giving the ball away in the most crucial areas of the field is driving the Lions boss to distraction.

“It was just our ball movement, they kicked five goals from their centre forward turnovers, so we had backs coming out of defence kicking straight to them,” Leppitsch said.

“We had nine more clangers than they did. So it was either (mistakes) exiting the 50 or entering the 50 that summarises our night.

“We had enough entries but the efficiency going forward two weeks in a row we’ve blown our chances inside 50.

“In a way its an encouraging sign. At least we’re getting the ball there to make the errors inside 50.”

The second-bottom Lions now have a week’s break before they face the Gold Coast where victory will seriously hinder their Queensland rivals’ finals challenge.

Leppitsch left no doubt that, after working on stoppages in the lead up to facing the Eagles, offensive efficiency will be the focus ahead of the Q-Clash.

“It’s a combination of decision making and skill, at times we miss the target, as in the ball hits the ground, other times we miss the target, as in it’s open but we kick it long,” Leppitsch said.

“They’re things we have to continue to work on and each player for different reasons needs to work on that.

“We did a lot of work on the stoppages this week and probably not enough work on the offence.”
