Lake sent straight to AFL tribunal

Hawthorn defender Brian Lake has been directly referred to the AFL tribunal for his chokehold on North Melbourne’s Drew Petrie.

The match review panel charged Lake with misconduct, but opted against grading the incident.

Instead the tribunal will sit on Tuesday and analyse the case.

Petrie was charged for “making unreasonable and unnecessary contact to the face of Brian Lake” in the scrap during Friday night’s clash at Etihad Stadium.

Petrie can escape with a reprimand if he submits an early plea in response to the level-one misconduct offence.

If Petrie fights the case and loses he will be banned for one match.

Brisbane midfielder Tom Rockliff, Essendon’s Brendon Goddard and West Coast forward Josh Kennedy are all facing one-match bans.

Rockliff was charged for striking Alex Rance in the Lions’ 25-point loss to Richmond last Saturday.

Due to his existing poor record and previous carry-over points, Rockliff will miss Saturday’s clash with West Coast even if he submits an early plea.

Goddard was given a two-match rough-conduct ban for engaging in rough conduct against Kane Cornes, but an early plea will reduce the sanction to 168.75 points (a one-match ban).

Kennedy’s six-year good record means his level-three rough conduct charge will be downgraded to a one-match ban with an early plea.

Kennedy collected Sydney’s Zak Jones, with the head-high blow forcing Jones to be substituted out of the game due to concussion.

Gold Coast defender Rory Thompson (striking) can escape suspension with an early plea, while GWS ruckman Shane Mumford (striking) and North Melbourne’s Luke McDonald (tripping) will not be banned even if they fight their respective charges.

Brisbane’s Claye Beams was the only other player to be charged from round 16, and can accept a $1950 fine for making contact with umpire Rob Findlay.
