Kangaroos thump wayward Saints

North Melbourne have backed up their win over AFL premiers Hawthorn with a 59-point thumping of St Kilda at Bellerive.

The Kangaroos’ search for consistency took a step forward as they crushed the hapless Saints 13.14(92) to 3.15(33) in front of 10,641 fans.

Brad Scott’s North Melbourne side had made a habit of falling to the league’s struggler’s after impressive wins over its big guns, but led from start to finish in their first outing at their Hobart base for 2014.

St Kilda tried hard but poor kicking meant they were always going to struggle from a 37-point halftime deficit and snap a 10-game losing streak.

The Saints had nine behinds on the board before finally kicking their first major moments before the halftime siren.

Ryan Bastinac, Lindsay Thomas, Todd Goldstein and Brent Harvey bagged doubles for North.

For the Saints, only David Armitage, with two, and Nick Riewoldt managed majors.

The writing was on the wall early for the visitors and North led by 30 at the first break.

Thomas booted two of his side’s three in the second as Riewoldt typified the Saints’ day, missing a set shot from 15m out in front.

The Saints finally got their first goal in the 28th minute of the second quarter, when Riewoldt converted from 25m wide to the right.

The Kangaroos kicked the first three of the third, including consecutive goals to Bastinac.

The Saints got their second of the day through Armitage but trailed by 56 points at the final break.

Kangaroos coach Scott will be disappointed his side could only manage a single goal, through Tasmanian crowd favourite Ben Brown, in the final term.
