Hawks lose Hodge, regain Mitchell in AFL

Hawthorn have lost captain Luke Hodge, but regained fellow star utility Sam Mitchell for Friday night’s AFL grand final rematch against Fremantle.

Hodge injured his groin in last Friday night’s narrow win over Essendon and Mitchell was a late withdrawal from the game because of a calf muscle problem.

The Hawks also promoted Matt Spangher and dropped Tim O’Brien.

The Dockers were forced to make three changes, following the suspensions of Nathan Fyfe and Zac Dawson, plus Michael Barlow’s knee injury.

Garrick Ibbotson will play his first senior game since round 19 last season, while Alex Silvagni and Lachie Neale were also recalled.

Adelaide made five changes, three of them unforced, for Saturday’s home match against Sydney.

The Crows lost Shaun McKernan (concussion) and Brad Crouch (leg) and also dropped Jason Porplyzia, Lewis Johnston and Sam Shaw.

Crouch’s younger brother Matt will make his senior debut.

The Crows also recalled Jared Patrenko, Kyle Hartigan, Rory Laird and Josh Jenkins.

Sydney brought in Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Jeremy Laidler for Craig Bird (calf) and Sam Reid (Achilles).

An ankle injury means Brett Deledio’s 140-game consecutive games streak is over.

He was among three players left out of Richmond’s side for the Saturday match against the Western Bulldogs.

Shaun Hampson has a knee injury and Nathan Foley was dropped.

Nathan Gordon will make his Richmond debut and Orren Stephenson will take Hampson’s ruck spot.

George Burbury is back in Geelong’s side for the Saturday night blockbuster against Collingwood after suffering a broken jaw in their pre-season game, also against the Magpies.

Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury and Cats veteran Corey Enright were named after suffering ankle injuries last weekend.

`Pies forward Alex Fasolo is back for his first AFL game in 345 games, while Lachlan Keeffe was brought in for Nathan Brown (shoulder) and Ben Sinclair has a hamstring injury.

The Cats also recalled Jared Rivers, with Taylor Hunt suspended and Dawson Simpson axed.

Essendon have ruled out ruckman Patrick Ryder (ankle) for Sunday night’s match against Carlton.
