GWS reject rumour about Carney AFL switch

Greater Western Sydney boss David Matthews has rubbished rumours he’s interested in having NRL discard Todd Carney join the AFL club.

There were suggestions Matthews had personally sounded out Carney for a pre-season stint with the Giants following his sacking from Cronulla.

But Matthews on Wednesday rejected the claim – originally made by a radio presenter in Adelaide.

“Absolute rubbish,” the chief executive told Triple M’s Grill Team in Sydney.

“A complete rumour, I don’t know where he got it, whether he made it up or not. But, no, incorrect. Completely incorrect.”

Matthews said the rumour probably stemmed from discussions around Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt, both of whom made the switch from NRL to AFL in recent years.

“But we’ve got no interest at all in Todd,” he added.

“We wish him well. He’s obviously got some things that he’s working through, but there’s no truth to that at all.”

Matthews joked he was surprised he hadn’t been bombarded with phone calls from rugby union clubs wanting to poach some of his Giants, given the fact they’re the only AFL club to have produced a Wallaby in Folau.
