Green won’t extend AFL career with GWS

Greater Western Sydney won’t look to tempt Melbourne veteran Brad Green out of retirement at the end of the AFL season – and that suits the veteran just fine.

Green announced earlier this month that his 13th season would be his last, but soon after was linked to the Giants.

GWS list manager Steve Silvagni suggested his club would look at extending the career of the 31-year-old, as they did with Luke Power, Chad Cornes, Dean Brogan and James McDonald this year.

Green admitted he was surprised by the speculation.

“I’m retired. We’ll leave that alone,” Green said after his side’s 25-point win over GWS.

“I announced my retirement and then they were saying that I’m going (to GWS). It’s news to me.”

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy confirmed on the weekend that his club wouldn’t look to change Green’s mind.

With games against Adelaide (home) and Fremantle (away) remaining, it’s unlikely Green will have another chance to sing the Demons’ song in the rooms again.

But the man who stepped aside to let “emerging talent grow” said it was vital his young teammates focus on the final fortnight of the season, not 2013.

“We need to take some positive steps into pre-season,” he said.

“For these guys going forward, it’s momentum.

“Momentum going into next year – to say `we’ve got a lot to work on, but we’re on the right track’.”

And Green, the last remaining player from Melbourne’s 2000 grand final side, feels his club is beginning to move in the right direction under Mark Neeld.

“We’re starting to get games into our young boys,” Green said.

“Jeremy Howe stepped up again (on Saturday) and I thought some of our mids and backs worked pretty hard and our forwards tried to lock it in the forward line.

“They’re the things we’re after.”
