Preview:

The Giants play the Bulldogs on Saturday, 4.40PM at Manuka Oval.  Despite their different positions on the ladder, this is a more intriguing clash that you might think.  Both of these teams are young and looking forward, with Greater Western Sydney playing especially well after winning two of their first three games. When you consider they only won a single match in 2013, this is a pretty impressive start.

The Bulldogs are also showing some promise, however, especially in their narrow win against Richmond last weekend.  Lachie Hunter and Jack Macrae played especially well for the Dogs last round, and could trouble the Giants if they keep it up this week.  While the Bulldogs will be slight favourites to win here, the Giants have momentum on their side at the moment and could keep surprising everyone.

News:

He’s barely been in the AFL for five minutes, but GWS Giants rookie Josh Kelly already has the pundits raving and his normally circumspect coach tossing out compliments.

Midfielder Kelly, 19, last year’s No.2 draft pick has wasted no time in justifying that lofty status.

He racked up 11 possessions in little more than a quarter in his debut cameo as a substitute in the round two loss to St Kilda.

Given his first start in Sunday’s win over Melbourne, Kelly delivered again, kicking two crucial and well taken final quarter goals in a wet, low scoring encounter.

“We’ve seen some of that class and poise the 40 minutes he played last week at Etihad Stadium,” Giants’ coach Leon Cameron said of Kelly.

“For him to be really clean in those (wet) conditions (against Melbourne), it probably doesn’t suit that sort of player.

“He’s only 74 kilos wringing wet, and he’s a young kid trying to find his way.

“But there’s no doubt he’s got some extraordinary talent.

“The thing I like is he’s not scared to get down and dirty.

“As well as that he hit the scoreboard with some of those really good quality goals, his contested ball and his willingness to tackle, I think he’s won the rest of the group over by doing that.”

Opposing clubs can forget about making a move on the Victorian product, as he has already been locked up by the Giants until the end of the 2017 season.

He accepted a two-year contract extension in the wake of his polished debut against the Saints.

With their Spotless Stadium venue required for Sydney’s Easter Show, the Giants will play their next five games outside Sydney.

Two of them will be in Canberra starting with next Saturday’s clash with Western Bulldogs.

A win there would enable the 2-1 Giants to set a club record for their most wins in a season after just four rounds of the current campaign.
