Preview:

The first Sunday game of round 3 is between GWS and Melbourne, kicking off at 1.10PM at Spotless Stadium.  The Giants will no doubt enjoy being favourites for this match, in what is a novel status for the Sydney team.  GWS are currently sitting in 8th ladder position, with Melbourne in familiar territory down the bottom of the ladder in 18th.

Melbourne coach Paul Roos will be desperate for a victory after two bad weeks, including the worst loss of his coaching career last week against West Coast.  While he will see this trip to western Sydney as a good opportunity to take home some points, GWS are getting used to winning despite their narrow loss to St Kilda last round.

News:

GWS spearhead Jeremy Cameron has recovered from a couple of knocks and will be fit and ready to inflict some more pain on battling Melbourne.

The All-Australian forward had a quiet game against St Kilda last weekend not running around with his usual fervour, which prompted suspicions he might have been hurt.

“Jeremy copped a couple of knocks early,” Giants coach Leon Cameron said on Wednesday.

“It probably held him back a little bit in the second half, but he’s fine now.

“He trained today and he’s raring to go on Saturday.”

GWS are likely to start favourites after the winless Demons copped a 93-point thrashing from West Coast and kicked just 4.6 for the game.

While that’s an uncommon status for GWS, Cameron said it wouldn’t affect his players.

“Melbourne are coming up here to rebound, but we think we’re in good form and we look forward to that challenge on Sunday,” he said.

Cameron backed his other incumbent key forward, Jonathon Patton, to lift against Melbourne after he also had a quiet game against the Saints and emphasised how inexperienced the injury-prone third-year player was.

“To hold down a key position after playing 12 AFL games is a huge ask,” Cameron said.

“But he’s progressing in the right direction.

“He was fantastic against, Sydney, he was a little bit quieter for the St Kilda game, but I’m sure he’ll bounce back this weekend against Melbourne.

Cameron said yet another key forward and last year’s No.1 draft pick, Tom Boyd, was progressing well, but wouldn’t speculate on when he would make his senior debut.

The Giants announced on Wednesday that four of their youngsters including, last year’s No.2 draft pick, Josh Kelly, had signed contract extensions.

Midfielder, Kelly, who impressed on his debut against Saints in his cameo as substitute, has signed up to the end of 2017, and is expected to get more playing time next Sunday.

James Stewart, Cam McCarthy and Jake Barrett have also re-committed to the Giants to either the end of 2016 or 2017.

Just over 80 per cent of the Giants’ list are now locked in beyond this season, with that contingent including Cameron, Patton, Callan Ward, Heath Shaw, Phil Davis, Shane Mumford, Tom Scully, Stephen Coniglio and Lachie Whitfield.
