Preview:

The Suns take on the Lions this weekend in a South East Queensland derby, Saturday, 3.40PM at Metricon Stadium.  The Suns will go into this match as slight favourites, with the Gold Coast outfit growing up to become something of a force in the AFL.  A number of Suns players are performing well at the moment, including Dion Prestia, Jaeger O’Meara, David Swallow, and of course, Gary Ablett.  If all these names can put in big games on Saturday, the Lions might find themselves in trouble.

The Lions are in with a chance, however, and may be boosted by being QClash underdogs for the first time ever.  While the Brisbane side have suffered two losses against Hawthorn and Geelong in the first two rounds, a win against the Suns is definitely within their grasp.  Brisbane have only lost the first three matches of a season once since 1998, and will not want to start the 2014 season the same way they started the 2011 one.

News:

One measly quarter.

That’s all that’s stopped Gold Coast from posting more than one win in their AFL encounters with intrastate rival Brisbane according to Suns skipper Gary Ablett.

The Suns kicked off their rivalry with the Lions by beating them the first time the teams met back in 2011.

Since then, nothing.

The Lions have kept little brother quiet in the next five derbies, a feat that dual Brownlow medallist Ablett believes is all about his teammates failing to be competitive for the entire contest.

“It comes back to us playing four consistent quarters,” Ablett said.

“Games in the past we’ve played well for two or three quarters but there’s one quarter that lets us down where they kick five or six goals and there’s just no coming back from that.”

Saturday’s match between the pair at Metricon Stadium is arguably the first where the Suns go in with the favourites tag around their necks.

Last year the improving Suns were considered on a par with the Lions.

Now Ablett is confident his team is poised to show they’re top dogs in Queensland as the Lions still search for their first win under rookie coach Justin Leppitsch.

“The boys are a lot stronger than they were last year, a lot fitter,” Ablett said.

“We know the areas of our game we need to improve and need to get better.

“That’s what we’re focusing on. If we do that well hopefully that’s good enough to get us over the line.”
