Giants’ Greene impresses in big AFL loss

Looking at baby-faced Greater Western Sydney midfielder Toby Greene, it’s a surprise he’s as old as 18.

Watching him play, it’s hard to believe he’s that young.

The teenager was a shining light in the Giants’ 162-point loss to Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday.

Despite his youthful appearance, his love of the hard stuff stood out, Greene picking up more contested possessions (14) and clearances (eight) than anyone else on the field.

His 34 disposals was a remarkable feat in such a big loss, particularly because he was playing on Hawks veteran star Sam Mitchell, who he probably shaded.

But while his possession count was a career high, it was no great jump from what he has achieved in his previous 11 games.

He is averaging 25 touches and also topped the 30-disposal mark last round, when he was the AFL’s Rising Star nominee.

Giants coach Kevin Sheedy was happy to admit Greene had surprised him, even though his son Sam Sheedy, a GWS recruiter, had tipped him off.

“I didn’t think he’d be that good, I’ll be honest – I had no idea,” Sheedy said.

“Probably my son told me he was going to be really good.

“I thought when I see it, I’ll believe it.”

Sheedy said he loved the youngster’s attitude.

“He’s got poise, he’s nonchalant in his own way, he’s not arrogant, but he really takes the game on,” Sheedy said.

While Greene has found his feet, Sheedy admitted No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton was ready for a rest after managing just six touches and no score in his fourth game.

“He would be sore. When you don’t find the ball, you’re sore,” Sheedy quipped.

The coach said Patton was likely to be replaced by Israel Folau.
