Giants AFL forwards under the microscope

Israel Folau looks likely to have more responsibility in a new-look Greater Western Sydney forward line lacking young guns Jeremy Cameron and Jonathon Patton.

The Giants will blood their 34th AFL player, already equalling Gold Coast’s 2011 debutant tally, when Gerald Ugle, Sam Frost and Kurt Aylett all get their first games on Sunday against Fremantle in Perth.

With No.1 draft pick Patton omitted after playing five games and Cameron out with back soreness, Sheedy’s forward section is expected to include the 20-year-old duo of Josh Bruce and Nick Haynes, who have played just one and three games respectively.

Folau, a comparative veteran with eight senior appearances, has been listed to start at full forward, though Sheedy suggested he will also spend some time rucking.

“We’ve got a very young forward line – we’ll find out what we’ve got,” Sheedy said.

The latest injection of new blood is part of the Giants plan to see who of their many youngsters have legitimate AFL futures.

“They may have a chance or they may not, but we owe it on behalf of our supporters to do it properly, so that we can have a really top side in the next three to five years,” Sheedy said.

The game against the finals-chasing Dockers falls in the middle of a fearsome five-week stretch for the fledgling franchise.

In their past three games, they were heavily beaten by Sydney, Hawthorn and Adelaide, who were first, fourth and second respectively heading into this weekend.

The Giants’ first trip to Western Australia to play the Dockers, who entered the round out of the eight on percentage, is theoretically the easiest game of a run that ends with a home clash against Collingwood on July 28.

“We play the top-four sides, with Fremantle packed in between them – it’s a great challenge,” Sheedy said.

Sheedy was excited about the presence of four young NSW-ACT products in a team containing many changes from that hammered by the Crows.

Young midfielder Stephen Coniglio has back soreness, while veterans Chad Cornes and Dean Brogan have been rested, but ruckman Jonathan Giles is among those recalled.
