Geelong coach Chris Scott says he’s unlikely to risk triple-premiership star Steve Johnson in Friday night’s AFL clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Johnson said on Wednesday he’d been cleared of structural damage on his injured foot.

“There’s a little bit of pain there, but it hasn’t ruled me out for any amount of time at all,” Johnson told Fox Sports News.

“I had scans yesterday. They’ve come up that I don’t have any fractures.

“So, it’s just about how I manage it.”

Scott says the injury is a mystery.

“They still said there’s some chance he’ll play this week,” Scott said.

“But unless he’s absolutely right, I wouldn’t have thought we’d put him at risk.

“With these sort of things, we always tend to be conservative.

“At this time of year, with a player of Steve’s calibre, we’re taking that approach.

“The bottom line is we don’t really know what it is at the moment.”

Third-placed Geelong are equal on points with Sydney and ladder leaders Hawthorn on 15 wins and four losses.

Johnson has bounced from one controversy to the next in the past couple of weeks, beating a kneeing charge in round 19 and swinging his boot gently at the head of Fremantle’s Lachie Neale during last Saturday night’s round-20 game at Simonds Stadium.

The incident with Neale was deemed not reportable by the AFL’s match review panel.

The Cats announced on Wednesday that fourth-year coach Scott had extended his contract until the end of the 2017 season.

Scott, 38, who guided the Cats to a flag in his first season, had been contracted until the end of 2015 before agreeing to a two-year extension.

The two-time Brisbane premiership player is preparing Geelong for a fourth consecutive finals campaign.

“I’m really committed to Geelong, long term, and this just formalises that,” Scott told the club’s website.

“I think the club is happy and I’m certainly happy with the situation.”

Geelong chief executive Brian Cook said Scott had proved to be an astute coach.

“He has been committed to ensuring the team can continue to challenge for the premiership while, at the same time, introducing young players to ensure we regenerate as experienced players retire,” Cook said.
