Forner Swan to coach Giants women’s team

GWS Giants have appointed former Sydney player Tim Schmidt as coach of their National Women’s League team ahead of the inaugural season.

Schmidt, 30, has been heavily involved with youth and academy coaching since retiring due to injuries after the 2009 AFL season.

He was also instrumental in the launch of the first female AFL academies in Canberra, Wagga Wagga, Sydney and Newcastle.

The Giants are one of eight sides in the National Womens League, scheduled to start in 2017.

Schmidt was drafted to the Swans in 2003 with pick 29 and played 17 AFL games over six seasons.
