Essendon trade Ryder to AFL club Port

Essendon and Port Adelaide have finally brokered a deal to send wantaway ruckman Paddy Ryder to the South Australian AFL club.

Just hours before the AFL trade period ends on Thursday, the protracted negotiations over Ryder ceased with the Bombers accepting Port’s draft pick selections 17 and 37 for the ruckman.

The Bombers then on-traded pick No.37 to the Western Bulldogs for 2008 Brownlow Medallist Adam Cooney.

Cooney, who played 219 games for the Bulldogs, has agreed to a two-year deal with the Bombers.

Ryder, 26, walked out of Essendon and sought a trade, citing the ongoing supplements scandal at the Bombers as his reason for leaving.

In a separate deal struck on Thursday ahead of the 2pm AEDT trade deadline, Essendon secured ruckman Jonathon Giles from Greater Western Sydney for pick 53.

The Bombers view Giles as a ready-made replacement for Ryder, who leaves after nine years and 170 games at Essendon.

Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said Ryder was an excellent addition to his club, who were beaten preliminary finalists this year.

“We think Paddy can really add a lot to our team, both to share the ruck duties … and help out up forward,” Hinkley said in a statement on Thursday.

“Paddy is clearly a gifted player and we believe with the footy environment we’re creating at Alberton, he can take his game to a new level.”

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro wished Ryder all the best.

Dodoro added that the Bombers were thrilled to sign a “proven performer” in Cooney.

“From our discussions with Adam, he is very excited about coming to play for a big club in blockbuster games such as ANZAC Day and Dreamtime,” Dodoro said.

“We are excited about what he can offer us.”
