‘Dons appoint officials in AFL overhaul

Long-time AFL coach Neil Craig and former players’ association boss Rob Kerr will share the management of Essendon’s overhauled football department.

Sports lawyer Michael Abrahams will also join the Bombers as their integrity officer.

Essendon have made the appointments in the wake of their disastrous supplements scandal, which resulted in the club being kicked out of last year’s finals series and the 12-month suspension of senior coach James Hird.

The Bombers remain under ASADA investigation.

With Tuesday’s three appointments, the only senior position yet to be filled at Essendon is their chief executive.

That is expected to happen later this year.

Essendon decided to split the management of the football department.

Craig will be the general manager of performance, overseeing areas such as coaching, development and high performance.

Kerr returns to Essendon as their general manager of football operations, meaning his portfolio will include list management and recruiting.

Craig joined Essendon late last year in a new role as head of coaching development and strategy.

The veteran sports scientist previously coached Adelaide for seven years and had two years at Melbourne.

Kerr was an assistant coach at Essendon in the late 1990s before he went to the AFL Players’ Association, where he was chief executive for five years.

He left Brisbane, where he was the Lions’ national talent manager, to go back to Essendon.

Essendon’s last permanent football boss was Danny Corcoran, who decided not to return to the Bombers after serving a short AFL suspension stemming from the supplements crisis.

Ian Robson resigned as chief executive last year because of the scandal and Ray Gunston took over until December as an interim appointment.

Xavier Campbell is currently the Essendon chief operating officer.

Abrahams was previously legal counsel at the Australian Cricketers’ Association.
