Demons’ Jurrah quiet before court hearing

AFL star Liam Jurrah says he feels good ahead of a court hearing into assault claims.

The Melbourne Demons player has been accused of taking part in an attack in March at an Alice Springs town camp.

He and his co-accused, Christopher Walker and Josiah Fry, face four counts of aggravated assault, one count of unlawfully causing serious harm and one count of being armed with an offensive weapon at night.

Jurrah is to appear in Alice Springs Magistrates Court on Monday.

Asked whether he felt okay ahead of his court hearing as he prepared to board a flight at Darwin airport to Alice Springs, Jurrah said: “Yes I do.”

He declined to make further comment.

Upon arrival at Alice Springs airport, he was greeted on the tarmac by a car and gave waiting media the slip.

Jurrah is accused of being involved in an attack that police allege involved weapons including an axe and a nulla nulla, traditional Aboriginal club.

Jurrah could face jail if found guilty on the charges, although the hearing that begins on Monday before Magistrate David Bamber will not determine guilt or innocence.

The preliminary examination, expected to take three days, will determine whether there is enough evidence to justify the charges against the footballer proceeding to trial.
