Demons Clayton Oliver signs AFL extension

Melbourne have moved quickly to secure the future of exciting youngster Clayton Oliver, signing the talented midfielder to a contract extension tying him to the AFL club until the end of the 2019 season.

Oliver, the fourth overall pick at last year’s draft, has made an impressive start to his AFL career, earning a rising star nomination after his 22-disposal effort against Greater Western Sydney in round one.

“It was a very easy decision … my manager said ‘Just go with it’ and I did,” Oliver said.

“I thought I’d get it out of the way and get it done with because I was going to sign eventually.

“It’s been a massive whirlwind ride and it’s great to know I’ll be with the club for a few more years.”

The 18-year-old’s initial deal was due to expire at the end of the 2017 season.

“We are very happy that he has agreed to extend his original two-year deal and we look forward to watching his development over that period and beyond,” Demons football chief Josh Mahoney said.

“We will continue to manage his loads at training and games this year, as he learns to cope with the demands of AFL.”
