De Goey earns AFL rising nomination

The best game of Jordan De Goey’s debut AFL season has earned him a Rising Star nomination.

The 19-year-old laid 12 tackles and had 18 possessions in Friday night’s loss to Sydney.

Collingwood recruited De Goey with the fifth selection in last year’s national draft.

The midfielder made his debut in round one and has played 13 games.

“He tackles hard, wins contested ball and never takes a backward step,” said Magpies coach Nathan Buckley.

“His teammates know what they are going to get on and off the field and his willingness to learn has been a big reason for his consistent influence on field.

“He has had a promising debut season and has provided plenty of reason for excitement about what he can bring to the team as he matures.”

In May, De Goey signed a contract extension until the end of the 2018 season.
