Dangerfield coy on Adelaide AFL return

Move along. Nothing to see here.

Patrick Dangerfield’s return to take on Adelaide with new AFL club Geelong is “just another week” according to the man himself, desperate to play down his first appearance in navy and white against his old side.

Dangerfield’s move to Geelong was the biggest trade of the off-season and on Friday night 50,000 Crows fans will give their verdict on the move.

At this stage, it could be a rare trade win-win.

Dangerfield’s move may have suited both parties with the 26-year-old favourite among bookies for the Brownlow Medal and Adelaide being spoken about in early premiership conversations.

For 154 games, Dangerfield dazzled for the Crows, but he insists there is no sentimentality to his return.

“As soon as I arrived at the Geelong footy club, signed the contract … that’s (Adelaide) where I was and (Geelong’s) where I’m at now,” he said.

“I don’t see this week being any different to previous weeks.”

Dangerfield’s calm over his return could be traced to the manner of the move; neither acrimonious or surprising, and made easier by conduct he called “incredibly professional” from both clubs.

His intention to move back to his home-town of Moggs Creek was signposted well in advance, announced only after Adelaide made a finals exit at the hands of Hawthorn last year.

Whether Crows fans support the move will be made abundantly clear when the gun midfielder gets his first touch of the football.

Dangerfield says he’ll be doing his best to keep busy on the field and not to be swayed by the best fan atmosphere in the league.

“Once the game starts you focus on the current contest or the next contest,” he said.

“If you look too far ahead or anything external it can sway your focus.

“We’ll control what we can control and hopefully play our brand of footy which we know wins games.”
