Chaplin fires up against old side Port

Troy Chaplin has kicked only 13 goals in 178 AFL games, which is understandable given that he’s a defender.

So his two goals in the last quarter of Richmond’s 20-point win over Port Adelaide were cause for celebration for the big man.

Especially against his old side, having played 140 games for Port between 2004 and 2012 and finishing runner-up in their 2010 club award.

And especially as they were his only two goals this year.

“That’s what happens when you go to another club,” Chaplin said of his emotional display which included giving a bit of lip to his former teammates.

“They had a fair bit to say back,” Chaplin added on ABC radio.

“There was probably a fair bit of emotion in it. That’s probably why some of the Port boys took it a bit personally.”

Chaplin also pointed to his jumper as he gestured to the pro-Richmond crowd of 21,483 at Etihad Stadium.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick grinned when asked about the efforts of Chaplin, who was third in Richmond’s best-and-fairest award in 2013.

“I was very surprised he kicked two goals,” Hardwick said.

“It was great for Chappy to go forward.

“He’s come from Port. He’s a very proud man.

“It’s always good to see a back kick a goal.”

Defender Alex Rance and onballer Dustin Martin were again good contributors for the Tigers while much-maligned key forward Jack Riewoldt kicked 3.1.

Riewoldt has kicked 44 goals and trails Port’s Jay Schulz by six in the Coleman Medal standings.

Hardwick says the two-time Coleman Medallist has always had an unselfish attitude but the recent improvement has possibly come more from his accuracy in front of goal.

“Jack finished with three goals and four score assists. He was terrific today,” Hardwick said.

“He’s back to the Jack we love.

“He’s a real team-first player which is impressive for a guy who’s a full-forward.

“They’re not often built that way.”

North Albury recruit Anthony Miles was also among Richmond’s best in his 16th match while Deniliquin product Sam Lloyd kicked three goals in his sixth game.
