Campo unsure on Crows coaching job

Adelaide’s caretaker Scott Camporeale has found enjoyment again in footy but won’t decide on any fulltime coaching bid until the end of the Crows’ season.

Camporeale has banked three AFL wins and two losses since taking over after the alleged murder of head coach Phil Walsh on July 3.

And while he’s riding a groundswell of support in Adelaide, Camporeale says he won’t be rushed into deciding whether to pursue the fulltime job.

“That will be at the end of the year,” he told reporters on Thursday.

“Our sole focus is to make sure we keep winning and whatever happens after that, we’ll decide at the end of the year.”

Camporeale’s poise since taking over has won praise from players and staff but the 40-year-old deflects accolades.

“I am very proud of the playing group, the coaches, the staff at the footy club – everyone has been affected by what has happened,” Camporeale said.

“But particularly the players. They have to perform on the weekend and the game is tough enough as it is, let alone having those sort of things in your mind as well.”

Support within the club since Walsh’s death had been incredible, he said.

“Footy clubs are a wonderful place to be in adversity,” Camporeale said.

“I have been involved for over 20 years and – not that I have been involved in something that has happened like this year – but whenever there is a problem with someone or something happens within the club … they’re a great place to be, a great outlet for us.”

Camporeale said he was unashamedly borrowing Walsh’s playbook as the ninth-placed Crows chase a finals berth.

“When you become senior coach, you’re more broad, you have to spread yourself across all 45 players,” he said.

“I definitely have built more stronger relationships with a lot more of the guys.

“I had a really good mentor and Phil just showed me how to do it so I carried on those messages.

“It’s always a challenge being in the hot seat but I have really enjoyed it. I have had a couple of wins along the way, that always helps.”
