Buddy and Kurt show sparking Swans

Sydney’s Buddy and Kurt show is gaining momentum.

Lance Franklin kicked nine goals against St Kilda at the SCG on Saturday and Kurt Tippett three in their biggest combined effort for the Swans so far.

Because of injuries – mainly Tippett’s – the formidable duo have only played together nine times in Sydney’s 20 games.

Nonetheless they have combined for 56 goals, with Franklin kicking 35 and Tippett 21.

Franklin, who zoomed to the top of the Coleman Medal standings with 61 after his big haul in the 71-point rout of the Saints, appreciates the value of having a 201cm accomplice up forward.

“I’m loving playing with Tippo. We’ve played eight games together, so it’s still early stages in our career together,” said Franklin after his 200th AFL game.

“He’s obviously a terrific player.

“Just having another focal point up there with me obviously helps.”

Tippett, Sydney’s leading goal kicker last year, made a delayed start to an injury-interrupted season, and has played just nine games.

“He actually trained probably as good as he had for quite a while on Thursday and did much of the session, which he hadn’t done for a while,” Swans coach John Longmire said.

“We’re trying to build on his training time and playing time and he looked better for that again today.

“He was moving a lot better, so that was a good sign.”

But Sydney are not without their injury worries.

Josh Kennedy (hamstring) and Craig Bird (knee) are set to have scans..

Of those who missed the Saints clash, Longmire doubted Ben McGlynn (calf) would return for next week’s away game against Western Bulldogs but was more hopeful about Nick Smith (back) and Rhyce Shaw (ankle).
