In terms of turnover and ticket numbers and horseracing aside, the Brownlow Medal has emerged as the biggest single sports event for Sportingbet outside of the AFL Grand Final.

“If you work on the trading floor you know not to ask for the day off, because it’s all hands on deck from first thing in the morning until the winner is announced,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.

“We’ve been taking bets on this year’s Brownlow Medal since late 2013, but around 50% of the total turnover is generated on the final day.”

“We expect to take more than 30,000 individual bets across our 75 Brownlow Medal markets on Monday alone and we’ll be betting on the winner live in the run right up until the final round of votes.”

Sportingbet expects Cats Captain Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett to fight out a photo finish, with Selwood the $2.75 favourite ahead of Ablett at $4.

On Saturday, a Sportingbet punter placed $50,000 on Selwood at odds of $1.15 to finish in the Top 5, while the biggest bet for Ablett to win is a massive $60,000 wager at odds of $2.05 placed way back on May 22.

“Our analysts have Ablett in front heading into the final round, only to be beaten by Selwood in a photo finish,” Brown said.

“But our punters have been backing plenty of others and the likes of Jordan Lewis or Dyson Heppell would be a terrible result for us after significant support for them at big odds.”

One punter will collect $93,000 if Lewis wins after placing $3,000 at odds of $31 with Sportingbet last month. Another Sportingbet punter had $1,000 @ $51 on Heppell in early August.
