Carlton’s stunning loss to Melbourne shows the confidence of their players is shot.

The Blues had two more scoring shots than the Demons on Saturday, two more inside 50s and also led in contested possessions and clearances.

But they kicked a wasteful 7.16 and slumped to a 23-point loss.

Carlton are in a massive hole with a 0-4 start – their worst opening to a season in 25 years.

“There’s no doubt we’re low on confidence,” said captain Marc Murphy.

“I don’t think you can expect to win … when you finish (in front of goals) the way we did.

“We focused on a lot of areas – we showed a good attack on the ball and our contested ball was up.

“But finishing off just wasn’t good enough.”

Blues veteran Andrew Walker also gave a damning assessment of the team, saying they were too quiet on the field.

He said it reminded him of his early days at Carlton, when they were also at a low ebb.

“It does get very quiet out there at times,” Walker said.

“That yuck feeling has come back again.”

The Blues were already in big trouble following their meek 81-point surrender to hated rivals Essendon in round three and Saturday’s upset ramps up the pressure.

The political rumblings have started, with club powerbroker Bruce Mathieson calling for wholesale change at the club.

But there is widespread support at the club for veteran coach Mick Malthouse, who is in his second year with Carlton.

“There’s probably no better person to lead us out of the hole we’re in at the moment,” Murphy said.

Carlton face another major test on Easter Sunday when they play the Western Bulldogs, who have won their last two games.

Senior Blues players Kade Simpson and Lachie Henderson will face the media on Monday morning as the club deals with the media blowtorch.

Murphy also has a media conference at the AFL in the afternoon with Bulldogs captain Ryan Griffen.
