Beams ready for Pies challenge

Keeping a low profile won’t be an option for Brisbane recruit Dayne Beams ahead of the Lions’ AFL season opener against his ex-club Collingwood.

And it seems the former All-Australian wouldn’t have it any other way.

The ex-Magpies premiership winner admits he is still getting used to donning the Lions colours.

Not that you could tell in his impressive Brisbane debut in last weekend’s three-point NAB Challenge opening win over St Kilda on the Sunshine Coast, notching 25 classy touches.

However, the midfielder still feels comfortable enough at Brisbane to stir his former teammates ahead of their blockbuster opener.

“I haven’t got any texts yet (from ex-Magpies players ahead of the April 4 game),” he laughed.

“It’s still a bit early but I might throw a few in myself to stir the pot a little bit.”

Beams has already turned heads at Brisbane.

He was the key to their opening win over a young Saints outfit on Saturday and again looks set to form an integral part of their new-look Lions midfield against Sydney at Coffs Harbour on Friday night.

Beams admits wearing the Lions colours still feels odd to him despite lining up in a squad that also features his brother Claye.

“It was nice to get my hands on the ball and feel comfortable in the new colours,” he said of his debut.

“But it felt different pulling on the new colours for the first time.”

Beams didn’t want to give too much away when asked whether it was best to get a game against his former club out of the way in the first round.

“They reckon it is just coincidence,” he laughed.

“Even when I was playing for Collingwood I don’t think we ever got them until halfway through the year so to get them first up is going to be great.

“Hopefully we will get a win and I don’t get booed too much.”

Meanwhile, fellow top name recruit and ex-Geelong gun Allen Christensen admitted he was not sure whether he would return from a back complaint and make his Lions debut against the Swans.

“If not this week then definitely against Gold Coast (in March 20 NAB Challenge away clash),” he said.
