ASADA weighs options after AFL verdict

The AFL anti-doping findings have left ASADA with two bad options – launch an appeal that no-one wants or concede defeat.

The tribunal’s acquittal of 34 current and past Essendon players is a massive blow to the credibility of the national anti-doping body.

It could not have any of the charges upheld despite a joint investigation with the AFL that lasted more than two years.

ASADA boss Ben McDevitt will front the media in Canberra on Wednesday morning.

He was furious after Tuesday’s findings, saying in a statement that what happened at Essendon in 2012 was “in my opinion, absolutely and utterly disgraceful”.

ASADA’s parent body, the World Anti-Doping Agency, can also appeal against the tribunal findings.

But AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said on Tuesday his personal wish is that there are no challenges to the tribunal findings.

No-one in the game would welcome any appeals – everyone wants the supplements saga to end.

The three-man tribunal jury ruled unanimously in favour of the players.

While the landmark findings are a massive win for the players, McDevitt is far from the only person who continues to criticise Essendon over the 2012 supplements program.

McLachlan said the supplements regime was reckless and AFL Players Association chief executive said the tribunal findings did not absolve the club of blame.

While the findings are yet to officially become public, excerpts that have appeared in the media are also scathing of Essendon.

The tribunal said there was a “deplorable absence of records in the program relating to its administration” at Essendon.

The jury also criticised the role of Stephen Dank, the sports scientist who ran the supplements program.

Dank will learn his tribunal fate after Easter.

“One of the players said in his interview that Mr Dank acted as if he was God,” the judgment read.

“It seems that he was treated as if he was God in relation to the supplements program.

“It’s clear the players had no actual knowledge of the substance with which they were injected.”
