Evergreen St Kilda skipper Nick Riewoldt has signed a one-year contract extension which will see his remarkable AFL career with the Saints continue until at least the end of 2016.

Riewoldt, 32, turned back the clock with a stellar 2014 campaign which saw him claim All-Australian honours for the fifth time and win a record sixth club best and fairest award.

The key forward was already contracted for next year, but the latest extension will now almost certainly see the 281-game veteran become just the fifth Saint to reach the 300-match milestone.

Coach Alan Richardson lauded Riewoldt’s positive influence on a young playing group.

“He sets a tremendous example to our young players on how to prepare for AFL football. His commitment to leave a strong legacy, that he’s carried on from the likes of Robert Harvey and Nathan Burke in the early 2000s, is a credit to him,” said Richardson.

“His personal legacy is intact, but he has this deep desire to leave one for the football club and that is why he is so widely respected both externally and internally.”

Richardson also flagged the prospect of Riewoldt playing on beyond 2016 if his body held up.

Riewoldt’s stellar 2014 campaign was a rare highlight this year for the Saints, who won just four matches to claim the wooden spoon for the first time since 2000.
