Ablett set to re-sign with Gold Coast

Dual Brownlow medallist Gary Ablett is expected to sign a contract extension with AFL club Gold Coast soon.

Ablett, whose lucrative five-year contract will finish at the end of next season, is yet to officially put pen to paper.

But discussions are well advanced, with the 30-year-old set to accept another multi-million-dollar deal.

“It would be fantastic to confirm Gaz and the club had agreed on a new deal. But unfortunately, it’s not the case. Not yet, anyway,” the Suns tweeted in response to recent speculation.

Ablett left Geelong at the end of the 2010 season to sign up with the expansion franchise as their inaugural skipper.

He looked destined to lead Gold Coast into their maiden finals campaign earlier this year, only for a shoulder injury in round 16 to end his season and derail the Suns’ September hopes.

Next week Ablett is likely to be named in his eighth consecutive All Australian team, while he remains among the Brownlow Medal favourites despite missing the final seven rounds of the season.
