Wests Tigers vs Melbourne Storm 2014 NRL Round 21 preview, tips and teams

A season best performance by the Tigers in round 18, which saw them run in nine tries in their 46 – 18 trouncing of the Bulldogs, was quickly forgotten last when they suffered a 28 – 18 loss to the Dragons. The defeat was shrouded in further controversy about the future of Coach Mick Potter and the tense relationship between him and Captain Robbie Farah.

That drama continued to play out well into the week and the atmosphere at the club at the moment cannot be good, especially when the Tigers are trying to focus on fighting it out with five other teams who like them, sit on 22 competition points. Despite the drama, Potter is sticking with the same squad, which included Farah, as they search for only their fifth win since round 10.

STORM

It has been a bit of an up and down season for the Storm thus far but, as all good teams do, they are starting to hit form now that the finals series is on the horizon. After defeating Canberra 28 – 14, the Storm travelled to Brisbane and in one of their best performances of the year, recorded a comfortable and impressive 30 – 8 victory over the Broncos. Cooper Cronk was back to his best whilst the workman-like forward pack went about their business in the usual manner. The Storm now sit sixth on the ladder and with only two more home games to come, can ill-afford to drop a match like this that are expected to win. They’ll be aiming for their third consecutive win for the first time since the opening three rounds of this year’s competition.

HEAD TO HEAD

The Storm have won three of the past five matches against the Tigers and recorded a 30 – 8 win on their last visit to Campbelltown back in 2008. Each of the past five matches have been hard fought contest with three of them producing total match points of less than 30. Expect the Tigers, who have a good-sized forward pack that can challenge that of the Storm’s, to come out firing after the events during the week but the Storm are a professional side and will be handle the challenge.
